So i finally have a butt load of time now that I’m done with my first year of college so i decided to start working on a new small project to get the creativity flowing again. I have a lot more to add to this one and need to fine tune the shading on the face because i did that really quickly and haven’t done the ear yet, or the hair really, but hopefully this will be a cool one once i put about 8 more hours into it. I know that’s not a lot of time to put into something but I’d prefer to call this a sketch than a drawing. I am really doing this project to experiment with white and black on a toned paper because I want to do that a lot this summer. So, yeah I’ll have another picture of my progress up soon.

Drawing Final. 42”x30” Spent somewhere between 50-60+ hours on this. Composition dealing with life v. death / light v. dark. Also focused on organic curves v. geometric shapes. And focused on a strong set of diagonals that would be interrupted by verticals as well as organic shapes.

I’m hoping to start doing more portraits this summer as well as some other focus, though posts won’t be as frequent as last summer since I will be working on my architecture portfolio more.

Hey! So I know I’m usually one to focus on portraits, but I had to post this given the amount of time I put into this. This is my midterm for a drawing class in my first year of college. I probably spent 45+ hours on this 42”x30” charcoal drawing. The teacher really likes to focus on emphasizing contrast and plane changes so that is why the object are a bit more dramatic than they would actually appear.

There are some things that I missed, or did wrong. For starters, I wish I did not have so much empty space in the top of the composition. Although I tried to add excitement like cloths that were not originally part of the still life, it is still a bit empty for my liking. Also there are little details where I should have added more dark, or should have added more light.

Unfortunately this, I will admit, was taken on a phone, under shitty lighting, so that is why it is pixely and some lights that are in the bottom especially are not accurately depicted in this photo. So hopefully in the future I will remember to bring my dslr into the studio to take a better photo. For now, this is all I got.

If there is anything I learned from this class and from this midterm, it is that you are always wrong. Well no, I’m just exaggerating, but my teacher shows no sympathy. None.

Quickly drew this for my girlfriend and wrote around it “Hey Maddie, Will you be my.” Luckily I was able to present it to her in a way which surprised her so woo! Some of you may think this is stupid because you’re probably thinking, “well of course she’s your girlfriend, she’s your Valentine by default.” Well, maybe, but I thought I’d take an extra step pre-Vday to show her that she really is someone special to me. (Roses and Lilies are her favorite flowers)

Oh and she said yes! Woo!

Sorry about the quality of the photo. I took it on my iphone at 3am, so that being said, the lighting was poor since my roommate was already asleep.

Definitely wasn’t as focused with detail on this one. Really just did this to get the hang of working with color and working with conté. But I’d say for an experiment, it actually came out more than satisfactory.

First portrait worked on at college. Day 1. Done with Conté crayon.

So happy I found free time between my work to quickly get these colors down on the page. This is my first time doing a portrait in full color, so although it could use improvement, I am satisfied about how its turning out. Also, I didn’t really focus on getting the colors exactly right, but I liked giving myself some freedom on this one.

I wish i remembered which of my early tumblr followers mentioned this medium (conté) to me, because I am having a ton of fun with it.

Huge improvement since yesterday, so I’m quite happy about that. Just have the hair and some of the jacket left, as well as touch ups. Then gotta draw all the bulbs that make up the ‘R’ in the RUSKO stage lights. Should be another day’s worth of work

Summer Drawing #11. Day 1.

The lighting to the left of his eye and his cheek bone are a little off, so I will start again on that tomorrow. Second time doing white on black, yet its a totally different experience from the first one i did. Not even close to finished, but it’s a good enough start for now.

Not bad for using these pastels for the first time. Gotta fix the positioning of the lips and the lighting on the face, but i just wanted to get the eyes and most of the nose done for the night.

Just got new Unison Soft Pastels, so thought I’d try them out.

I’m not the best with color, so I’m starting out slowly with only shades of blue. Hopefully, in a couple drawings, I will transition into normal portrait colors.

I miss the comfort of working with charcoal, but im definitely having a ton of fun working with this new medium!
